Hacı Bayrâm-ı Velî and Akşemseddîn’s spiritual path (erkân) member, the great ârif Ulalı Hüsâm Efendi, was a man wholly devoted to God (merd-i Hudâ) who, by the command of his master, Hazrat Mecdüddîn Isâ, underwent a seven-year spiritual retreat (khalwah) in a cave.
This noble friend of God, who spread the breath of Hacı Bayrâm across a vast region stretching from Crimea to the Aegean Islands—especially throughout the Aegean and Marmara—transformed Ula into a true “circle of gnosis” (irfân ḥawzası) at a time when Vâhib Ümmî was awakening hearts in Elmalı, Hazrat Pîr Shabân-ı Velî in Kastamonu, and Merkez Efendi in Istanbul.
Written by Dr. Mustafa Tatcı—literature scholar and historian of Sufism at Gazi University—after meticulous research, the work titled “The Bayrâmî Shaykh Ulalı Hüsâm Efendi and the Life and Hymns (Ilâhîs) of Mehmed Shâfi‘î” stands as the first and only comprehensive study on Hüsâm Efendi.
Furthermore, the work resolves long-standing ambiguities regarding the spiritual lineage (silsilah) following Hacı Bayrâm-ı Velî and Hazrat Akşemseddîn. For years, the name of Hüsâm Efendi had been confused with Pîr Hüsâmeddîn-i Uşşâkî and his son Mehmed Şâfi‘î; works not belonging to him had been published under the name of other poets who bore the pen-name Hüsâm. Through Tatcı’s new study—based on comparisons of manuscripts, inscriptions, hagiographies (menâkıbnâmes) and lineage registers (silsilenâmes)—this major misconception has been definitively corrected.
Ulalı Azîz was a man of great love and gnosis. Through his life and the sacred hymns (ilâhîs) he uttered, he remains one of the guiding pole-stars of our spiritual world—though those walking in darkness are yet unaware of this luminous star.
From Hüsâm Efendi, a “Dîvân of Sacred Hymns (Dîvân-ı Ilâhiyât)”, two Sufi sons, and a rich cultural heritage related to the Bayrâmî spiritual order (erkân) have come down to us.
The Bayrâmî Shaykh Ulalı Hüsâm Efendi and the Life and Hymns of Mehmed Shâfi‘î presents, through first-hand sources, the life and lineage of Hüsâm Efendi, along with the collected works (dîvân) of both him and his son Hazrat Mehmed Shâfi‘î.
Hüsâm Efendi stands firmly within the spiritual lineage of Hacı Bayrâm, Akşemseddîn, İbrahim Tennûrî and Mecdüddîn Isâ of Akhisar.Though he was a renowned mystic in the 17th century, this noble-hearted ârif gradually fell into obscurity. Without doubt, through this valuable work, he will once again take his rightful place within our world of spiritual knowledge.
